Whatever type of freezer you own, the guidelines for freezing and thawing are exactly the same. We've put together the DO's of freezing food items to assist you in making the most of your freezer
DO's: 1. Cool food items that have just been cooked can be stored into small containers with lids in the fridge prior to freezing. Warm food raises the temperature in the freezer. This can cause other food items to begin defrosting. 2. Fill your freezer with food as it will prevent cold air from being circulated and also reduces the use of energy. Make sure to leave enough space between the packages so that air circulates around them. However, if you have gaps in between food items, fill half-filled plastic bottles with water in order to spread them apart and stop them from sticking to one the other. Be sure to squeeze the air out of each bag prior to sealing 3. Defrost your freezer on a regular basis whenever ice starts to build up. Food items will remain frozen in the refrigerator for a few hours until the freezer is defrosted. 4. Keep food inside the fridge in event of power failure or if you think that the freezer was shut off at some moment. Don't let the door open. Foods should be stored in the freezer and frozen around 24 hours. 5. Cover food with freezer-friendly containers or freezer bags for freezer use. Wrappings from supermarkets are safe for the majority of frozen foods that have the freezer lifespan of 1 and 2 months. 6. To ensure freshness, you should only freeze food that is fresh. Food that's been stored in the fridge for longer than a couple of days should be consumed or thrown away - never put it in the freezer. 7. Label food correctly using color labels to distinguish between fresh food items, such as fish, meats, chicken breads, milks, and cheeses 8. When freezing meat, make sure you make sure you check the cut. Large cuts of meat, such roasts or steaks shouldn't be stored for longer than 4 months (mincemeat for no more than three months). The meats that have been cooked will last for about one month. Fresh white fish lasts about 6 months. Oily fish needs to be used within three months. Parts of chicken can be frozen up to 3 months. 9. When freezing vegetables in side by side refrigerators, keep in mind that when properly frozen, vegetables keep not only the flavor but also the nutritional value as well. Peas runners beans carrots, broad beans, carrots broccoli, asparagus and peas are best placed in a pan prior to placing them. Pour boiling hot water over the top of the vegetables and allow simmering for 30 seconds, and then dumping into an icy bowl. Put in freezer bags.
